The high school has a band program where the band teachers go out to the nearby elementary schools and give band lessons to the students who want them. The kids can start taking lessons in 5th grade.
In August there is a beginner band camp held for 4 days that the students who are learning to play an instrument for the first time attend. The novice musicians are divided into small groups according to their instrument of choice, and a musician proficient on that instrument teaches them the basics.
E said she had a fun time at band camp today. While at home, she practiced blowing into her clarinet and getting a tone out of it without puffing out her cheeks. We were serenaded by many high pitched "tones" in addition to the typical clarinet ones. :) It wasn't easy for her, but she was working really hard at it. I'm very proud of her.
[No, her hands aren't in the correct position. They were working mainly on getting the right sound today.
(Day 211 of 365)]
Then, this evening after supper, E had to go back to the high school for the first practice of The King and I, the musical the high school will be performing in fall. The high school was looking for elementary school students to audition for the parts of the king's children. E tried out at the end of last school year for a non-speaking child's part and got it.
She's going to be a busy lady this coming school year!
Good for her! :)
